Item 1: Sherwood to Webb, graduate student, replying to his request for personal reminiscences of Ring Lardner. Comments upon nature of Lardner's writing and complexity of personality. Relates amusing story of alleged joke played on Clarence Budington Kelland. Refers to specific Lardner works and certain incidents of his last years. Mentions 1924 Democratic convention, Black Sox scandal, and other events, 1952: December 9
