Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Joseph H. Farrow Papers consists of five scrapbooks. Scrapbooks 1-3 contains congratulatory letters to Farrow on earning an Emeritus positon at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Scrapbook 4 contains event programs, news clippings and articles written by or discussing Farrow. Scrapbook 5 contains awards and photographs of Dr. E. H. Skinner and photographs of Farrow.

Collection Historical Note

Dr. Joseph Helms Farrow was born in Rocky Mount, Virginia. He received his B.S. degree in 1926 and his M.D. degree in 1930 from the University of Virginia. He interned at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia and completed his residency at Watt's Hospital in Durham, North Carolina. At Presbyterian Hospital in New York, he completed a Fellowship in Surgical Pathology, followed by further training in Surgery and Radiation Oncology. He joined the staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center where he rose from Clinical Assistant on the Breast Service to Attending Surgeon and Surgeon-in-Chief of the Breast Service in 1960. He held this position until he retired in 1969. He served in the Navy as a Commander from 1942 to 1946. He died March 4, 1977.

Farrow’s wife, Florence Skinner Farrow, received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from Washington University. She endowed the Joseph H. And Florence S. Farrow Professorship in Biomedical Engineering at Washington University. Mrs. Farrow’s mother, Florence Garrell Schade Skinner, graduated from Washington University in 1902 with a degree in civil engineering. Florence Skinner Farrow’s father, Dr. Edward Holman Skinner, also attended Washington University and received a medical degree from Saint Louis University in 1904.
