Collection Historical Note

In 1972, a petition circulated the campus of Washington University, asking for the formation of a Women’s Studies program.  The petition was successful and the program began soon thereafter.  This program was designed to cover women’s experience in the past, examine their experience in the present, and chart such directions as may make their future more fulfilling.  Women’s Studies was a field that combines the traditional concerns of many disciplines and applies their methods to new ends.  After its initial formation, the program coordinated courses offered by many departments in the College of Arts and Sciences, incorporated courses offered by other schools within the University, and offered tutorials and occasional cross-disciplinary seminars of its own.  It granted a B.A. in Women’s Studies to any student who, in addition to fulfilling the College requirements, completed twenty-one upper division units in Women’s Studies and a senior thesis or project.
