Scope and Contents of the Materials

The material in this collection is both personal and professional material that covers much of Mary Wickes’ life from her family life to school days through her long and active acting career.  Much of the material was kept it its original groupings and arrangement, thus some material pertaining to certain subjects may appear in two or more series.

Here you can find the transcript of Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton's speech given April 16, 1998 at the dedication of the Isabella and Frank Wickenhauser Memorial Library Fund for Television, Film, and Theater Arts.

Here you can find "In the Draft of an Open Mind," Mary Wickes' Inaugural Adele Chomeau Starbird Memorial Lecture Graham Chapel, Washington University, given April 12, 1988.

Collection Historical Note

Mary Wickes was born Mary Isabella Wickenhauser in St. Louis, Missouri on June 13, 1910.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1930.  She received the Distinguished Alumni Citation from Washington University in 1955.  Later she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts Degree from Washington University in 1969.  Wickes was an actress who had a long career on stage, in film, and on television in performances including Oklahoma!, Sister Act, and The Father Dowling Mysteries.  She died in Los Angeles, California on October 22, 1995.

Personal correspondence of Mary Wickes is closed until 2027 by request of the Trustee of the Mary Wickes Estate.
