Scope and Contents of the Materials
This final report was compiled by Isaac S. Taylor, Director of the Division of Works. He presented it to David R. Francis, President of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company in June 1905. Although the original index lists pages 1 – 382, this volume covers only through page 92. Not all pages have numbers, and there is no page 71. Also included are draft copies of two department reports, which were edited and included in the final report.
Items are arranged in the original order of the bound volume, followed by supplementary items. One oversized map was removed and is stored separately. A detailed inventory of the report can be found at the link below.
Collection Historical Note
The Division of Works was the entity charged with designing, constructing, and maintaining the buildings of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (World’s Fair). Construction planning began in 1901. The first offices of the department were located in the Odd Fellow Building at the corner of 9th and Olive Streets in downtown St. Louis, starting in September 1901. In May of 1902 the offices relocated closer to the fairgrounds, in buildings constructed for Washington University. Within the Division of Works were the following departments: Department of Architecture; Department of Civil Engineering; Department of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering; Department of Sculpture; Department of Landscaping; and the Department of Mural Decorations.
