This collection contains newsletters, magazines, journals, and other publications produced by various student groups, both general interest groups, as well as those associated with campus wide associations such as Greek Life, Campus Residence Halls (Residential Life), and the Campus Y.

The published title is listed in quotations, followed by volume and issue numbers if given, and dates.  General topic or the producing group is identified in square brackets, when this information is known.

Further details regarding issue numbering or dating is indicated by a note following the main entry.

Collection Historical Note

Early publications by students include items such as fight songs, social listings, literary and humor journals.  One of these early titles, “The Eliot Literary Magazine,” was described in the November 1915 issue as: published by students of Washington University, and that the purpose of the magazine is to afford opportunity for the expression of literary ability among students, faculty, and alumni.  Contributions were considered from all who are or who have been affiliated with Washington University.  The issues include articles about events on campus, short stories by students, poems by students, cartoons and advertisements.

By the mid-Twentieth century student production of newsletters, journals, and newspapers is more prolific.  Use of mimeograph machines, copy machines, and desktop computers allowed students to easily produce their own periodicals.  These often were short lived, and frequently cease production when the students in charge left the university.  Formally recognized student groups often received University funding.  From circa 1930s through 1968 this was administered by the Office of Student Affairs and after 1968 funds were allocated by the Student Union.
