Collection Historical Note

Jane Loevinger (1919-2008), who is well known for her work on the psychology of ego development, started her career in psychology at the University of Minnesota graduating magna cum laude in 1934 and went on to obtain her Master’s degree in psychometrics in 1939.  She obtained her doctorate from University of California, Berkeley in 1944, after which she taught for a little over a year Berkeley.

During World War II, Loevinger and her husband, chemist Samuel Weissman, moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where he helped to establish the weapon design component of the Manhattan Project and to develop the atomic bomb.  Jane did not work during this time, instead focused on having and raising their children.

After the war, Loevinger and her family moved to St. Louis, where she worked as a part-time professor of psychology at Washington University.   The psychology department recognized Loevinger and her achievements and appointed her research associate professor of medical psychology in 1961.

She was the creator of the Washington University Sentence Completion Test, a tool to measuring ego development.  This work resulted in many publications, including Measuring Ego Development, published in 1970.  In 1971, Loevinger became the "first woman full professor" of psychology at Washington University.  In 1973, she obtained a position as a full-time professor and in 1988, she became professor emeritus, during which time she continued her research and professional activities and became the William Stuckenberg Professor of Human Values and Moral Development in 1985.

She died January 4, 2008 at the age of 89.
