Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Leo E. Litwak Papers consists of typescripts, manuscripts, and other editorial matter toward College Days in Earthquake Country, Home for Sale, The Medic, Nobody's Baby and Other Stories, To the Hanging Garden, and Waiting for the News.  Also includes are several essays by Litwak and correspondence between Litwak and his literary agency, James Brown Associates.

Collection Historical Note

Leo E. Litwak (May 28, 1924 – July 27, 2018) is an American short story writer and novelist.  Born in Detroit, Litwak served as a combat medic in the United States Army from 1942-1946 during World War II.  He attended Wayne State University (1948) and Columbia University (1948-1951).  Litwak taught at Washington University (1951-1960), Stanford University (1966-1967), and San Francisco State University (1967-1995).  

Litwak has published three novels, To the Hanging Gardens, Waiting for the News, and Home for Sale; two nonfiction books, College Days in Earthquake Country and The Medic; and one short story collection, Nobody’s Baby and Other Stories. He has also published articles in publications such as The New York Times Magazine and Esquire.
