Collection Historical Note
The International Writers Center (IWC) was established at Washington University in October 1990 by William H. Gass “to build on the strengths of its resident and visiting faculty writers; to serve as a focal point for writing excellence in all disciplines and in all cultures; to be a directory for writers and writing programs at Washington University, in St. Louis, the United States and around the world; and to present the writer to the reader” (The Dual Muse: The Writer as Artist, the Artist as Writer). The IWC presented the International Writers Center Reading Series featuring writers such as David Foster Wallace, Michael Ondaatje, Ben Marcus, and Lydia Davis, published the St. Louis Literary Calendar, and hosted international conferences that generated the following books: The Writer in Politics (1992 conference), The Writer and Religion (1994 conference), and The Dual Muse: The Writer as Artist, the Artist as Writer (2 books; 1997 conference). In addition, with the assistance of Associate Director Lorin Cuoco, the IWC produced Literary St. Louis: A Guide (2000). Gass retired from the IWC in 2001 and it was reimagined as The Center for the Humanities under the directorship of Gerald Early in 2003.
