Historical Note:

John Thomas Clark was born July 21, 1884 at Louisville, Kentucky, the son of John R. and Sallie Clark. Clark married Patricia Ferguson in 1917, with whom he had two children, Marion and John. He was later divorced and married again, to Blanche Hays, in 1943.  Clark received an A.B. degree from Ohio State University in 1906. After teaching school for several years, he entered a long career with the Urban League. He was: from 1913 to 1916, housing secretary of the New York City Urban League; from 1916 to 1917,  field secretary of the National Urban League; from 1917 to 1926, Executive Secretary of the Pittsburgh Urban League; from 1926 to 1949, executive secretary of the St. Louis Urban League. He was a member of the National Conference of Social Workers, the American Association of Social Workers, the NAACP, YMCA, Alpha Phi Alpha, the Chamber of Commerce and the Social Hygiene Association. He was a Presbyterian and a Republican. Among his achievements in St. Louis were the establishment of a dental clinic for school children, a day nursery and literary and art contests.
