Historical Note: M. Leo Bohanon, a graduate of the University of Minnesota’s School of Social Work, began his career as a social worker as Boys’ Worker at Phyllis Wheatly Settlement House in Minneapolis.  Her later worked for the Minneapolis Relief Department as family case worker, supervisor in charge of federal certification, and as director of the agency’s social service department.  In 1944, Bohanon was invited to join the staff of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration as a Principal Welfare Officer.  He was among the first to be sent into Germany at the close of World War II, to do rehabilitation work with people who had been displaced by the war.  Bohanon returned to the United States in 1946 to become the Executive Secretary of the Omaha Nebraska Urban League.  In January 1950 he accepted the position of Executive Director of the Urban League of St. Louis and served in that capacity until 1964.
