Collection Historical Note

Eugene F. Zimmerman was born in Pittsburgh, Kansas in 1903.  In 1925, he graduated from Washington University with a degree in electrical engineering.  After working for General Motors, Zimmerman joined the aviation department of the Shell Oil Co. in St. Louis in 1930.  In 1932 he joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and in 1945 was assigned to temporary active duty as a member of the Naval Reserve Policy Board in Washington, D.C.  He participated in the occupation of Okinawa and was awarded the Bronze Star.  He returned to the United States in 1946 after assisting an airline company survey routes to the Far East in China, Korea and the Philippines.  Zimmerman was a commander of Naval Air Reserve Fleet Air Service Squadron 164, stationed at Floyd Bennett Field until retiring in 1962.

Zimmerman was married to Isabelle Lowis Zimmerman.  He was a past president of the Colonial Rifle and Pistol Club, a member of the board of directors of the Visiting Nurse Association of Staten Island, and also held membership in the Staten Island Power Squadron and the Quiet Birdsmen, a national organization of pilots.  He was also an elder of the First Presbyterian Church, Stapleton.  Zimmerman died on December 7, 1967.
